Media Encoding Tutorial

Step One:

Open Windows Media Encoder and select the "Convert a file" from the New Session options.

 

Step Two:

Select the file you wish to encode, the output file will automatically assign to a wmv within the same location itself or you can choose a different location if you wish, press next to move onto the next step of the coding.

 

Step Three:

Select “Windows Media (streaming)” from the list and click “Next”

 

Step Four:

On the above screen press next we will skip this part out and enter our settings manually.

 

Step Five:

Now you can enter all the information that is displayed during playback of your content, click next once this is completed.
  Step Six:

On the above screen make sure that the “Begin converting when I click Finish” IS NOT selected and then click Finish.
  Step Seven:

Click in the “Properties” button to open up the “Session Properties” pane.
  Step Eight:

You should see the properties pane similar to the above, select the “Compression” tab from within the pane and then click the “Edit” button.
  Step Nine:

You will see the “Custom Encoding Settings” pane, set the following settings, “Language” English (United Kingdom (en-gb), “PAL (25 fps)” and “Allow nonsquare pixel output” then click on the “Add” button located to the right of the “Target bit rates” section.
  Step Ten:

Enter “800K” into the input box and press “OK”
  Step Eleven:

The tab will automatically change to the settings for the 800 Kbps stream, from the dropdown “Audio format” select the “128 kbps, 44 kHz, stereo CBR” I’ll quickly run through the rest of the settings on this page
“Video size” is set to “720 x 410”,
“Frame rate” is set to “25”,
“Key frame interval” is “1”,
“Video bit rate” is “1063K”,
“Buffer size” is “5”,
“Video smoothness” is “90”,
“Decoder complexity” is left set to “Auto”.
DO NOT CLICK OK
  Step Twelve:

There are three tabs across the top of the current window “General”, “809 Kbps” and a third, click on this third tab, the settings are slightly different to before so now enter the settings below.
From the dropdown “Audio format” select the “48 kbps, 44 kHz, mono CBR,
“Video size” is set to “720 x 410”,
“Frame rate” is set to “25”,
“Key frame interval” is “1”,
“Video bit rate” is “343K”,
“Buffer size” is “1”,
“Video smoothness” is “65”,
“Decoder complexity” is left set to “Auto”.
Now you can click “OK”
The window will automatically close and you should now be back to the “Session Properties” pane, click on apply before moving onto the next stage.
  Step Thirteen:

From the tabs within the “Session Properties” pane (you are currently in Compression) select the “Video Size” tab, from the “Pixel aspect ratio” dropdown menu select the “Anamorphic 16:9 (4:3)” option and then click “Apply”
  Step Fourteen:

Now move onto the “Processing” tab and change the settings inside “Video” form “None” to “Deinterlace” again press “Apply”
Now you can click on the “Start Encoding” button and the program will start encoding your file to WMV.
In the bottom “Monitor” pane you can see how long it is going to take to encode your file, the program will tell you once the file has finished.
